SCHOLARSHIP To earn scholarship is to have some sort of academic achievement. At a young age, I would beg and beg my mother to draw things for me. It was a constant thing, everyday I would beg and beg till one day she said, "Why don't you try it?" Ever since that day, I haven't been able to put my pencil down. I have been drawing for ten years, constantly getting tutorial books as well as imitating how comic book artist draw and observing their style. In 8th grade, I finally took my first official art class, having never taken any before. This class helped me learn more skills, such as how to draw realistically. From then on, I took at least one, if not more, art classes every year in school. From Basic Design to Drawing and Painting to AP Studio Art, my journey through art classes has brought me to develop the skills I would need to create these comics. I, to this day, think about what I would've done if I had not taken any art classes. For certain, I would've never gained the skills needed to pass my class, had I not taken these academic courses. |
SKILL
In this project, I was allowed to show off the skills I learned in AP Studio Art with Mrs. Cherbak-Boyd. Through out this, I also improved on my skills to watercolor, as well as to meet deadlines and not procrastinate, something which I will need in order to succeed in the world of art. I also took sometime in the club Palette Pals to learn even more techniques by Mrs. Cherbak, including whats the easiest to do while water coloring and how to storyboard. As stated above, I have had all three visual art teachers. When I first came to the school, I started off with Mrs. Schulte. I had her for both Basic Design, Drawing and Painting, and Commercial Illustration. Her classes taught me how to be creative with my art. I will be honest, though I did not learn as much technical skill, I learned more that whatever you draw and whatever you do is art, you just have to put your mind to it. I then took a summer school class in Animation with Mr. Abbe. Originally, back when I was a freshman, I had planned to do an animation for my senior project. By the time the class was done, I scrapped that idea entirely. Mr. Abbe's class taught me how to finish projects in a small amount of time and still have fun. I was able to put that skill into pacing myself while drawing out my comic. Finally, I have had Mrs. Cherbak-Boyd for the past two years in both Digital Photography and two years of AP Studio Art (as well as being a teachers assistant in her class). She has taught me what it's like to be in a professional environment. I gained multiple technical skills (such as how to water color and use purple as shadows) and how to finish 12 assignments in less than 12 weeks. She made me realize what would happen if I didn't finish in time or did not put effort into projects, and without her, my project would not be here. These skills aren't normal skills. These are skills though, that have helped me in creating this project. |
HONOR For me, I took this as two definitions of honor. The first being a privilege, or the noun version, and the second being to fulfill, the verb version. I was able to be free in my own control. I was able to show my control and ability to draw without others knowing. With this, I was in charge of my own decisions and couldn't let my feelings get in the way of my work. Anytime I completed a page drawn, I felt like I had fulfilled myself with confidence knowing that this is bringing me steps closer to becoming a graphic novelist. But this was not honor just for me. This honor was for Santa Susana. When I first came to this school, I was very weary of the art department. There were only two teachers on campus teaching it, and I was afraid that I would not get the best education in it. I went into art for four years, having all the visual art teachers. I feel like I am honoring them by showing the skills I have gained within the four years at being enrolled in Santa Susana's visual art department. |
SERVICE My service is not as blatant as many others. With my service, I did it very subtly through my comic. The underlining message in my comic is about how we treat others badly because their different, be it racism or bigotry. When people read my comic, they will believe it is wrong for these people to be treated differently for having something different. My hope is that they realize that this is like daily life, and because of it will change the actions of their ways. I also have been using my comic to help encourages others. Now this may not sound as big, but to these people it is. When they seem me working and not giving up despite having to start over again, they begin to not want to give up either. I have had multiple friends come up to me saying that because of my dedication, they want to continue their work like me. |
